Most Worshipful Mel Stein was initiated in Al Bahr Shrine at age 22 in 1964 and received his 50 year pin in 2014 after serving as Potentate in 2000. He graduated cum laude from California Western University in San Diego in 1962 with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in accounting. In 1965 he received his Juris Doctor Degree and began the general practice of law. Mel retired after 47 years as an attorney with the last 20 years emphasizing family law, trusts and probate.
Mel served as Master of San Diego Lodge No. 35 in 1972; Venerable Master in the San Diego Scottish Rite Bodies in 1993, followed by a short term as Asst. Personal Representative. He was coroneted an Inspector General Honorary of the 33rd Degree in 1991.
Mel was installed as Grand Master of Masons in California in 2006. He was elected as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Shriners Hospital for Children. He also served for 9 years on the Board of the Masonic Foundation and for 32 years on Grand Lodge committees. He has been active in community affairs including having served a one year term on the San Diego County (Civil) Grand Jury; President of the San Diego Past Grand Jurors Association; County Parole Board; Chairman of the San Diego Kiwanis Foundation; Board of Directors of Tifereth Israel Synagogue; and Board of Directors of the San Diego/Imperial Council of Girl Scouts and Chairman of its Organizational Task Force.
